I share my experiences.
I have been a professional chef for more than twenty years. There are many stories as well as experiences I can share with you, some good and some not so good.
Squiggelicious - Durbanville
Squiggelicious - Durbanville is definitely a lovely visit if you plan a coffee shop outing. This lovely coffee shop have a perfect setting in the Sun Tyger Building in the Durbanville area. To start with the beautiful vibrant colours of their logo already draw you to them... and what a lovely atmosphere too! I had a lovely pot of tea (enough for 2 so I sat a bit longer to enjoy the second cup too!) and a piece of delicious carrot cake. I enjoyed the effort to make the plate look pretty with the squeezes of honey (?) and I couldn't help to notice how beautifully shiny and clean my cake fork ...
Angies Coffee Shop-Riebeeck -West
We discovered Angies Coffee Shop- Riebeeck-West when my husband had to work at a client's premises in Riebeeck Kasteel in the Western Cape. Annette from Kloovenburg Wine and Olive Estate told us they have been over to Angies Coffee Shop for lovely coffee. Unfortunately I had a small accident and I had to get stitches in my left ankle. I went to the friendly doctor in Riebeeck Kasteel. A week later we returned for my stitches to be taken out. And we decided to take a bite at Angies Coffee Shop- Riebeeck-West. The owner greeted us very friendly, seated us and offered my husband a lovely ice-col...
La Grapperia Bistro and Pizzeria @ Spice Route
For a lovely Women's Day treat yesterday my lovely hubby took me for a lovely day out to La Grapperia Bistro and Pizzeria @ Spice Route. As we didn't think it was necessary to book, it was actually VERY necessary. The friendly and professional managers managed to make a plan for us, which was extremely nice of them. Thank you! We were seated outside at La Grapperia Bistro and Pizzeria @ Spice Route. And we had a lovely view of Table Mountain as there were no clouds in sight. It was a very cold day itself, but lovely to be out for the ...
Goeters Coffee - Wellington
The first time I heard about Goeters Coffee- Wellington was via Facebook. I saw their beautifully photographed pictures of delicious coffee and treats and decided today to go pop in at this lovely, relatively new coffee shop in town, called Goeters Coffee - Wellington. And what a pleasant surprise to make the lovely day even better! I was greeted by very friendly staff, who made me feel very welcomed at Goeters Coffee- Wellington. Although I was a bit unsure if I only wanted a take-away coffee or sit down, I dec...
The Pleasant Pheasant - Riebeeck-West
This year's 2018 Valentines Day my husband decided to take me out for a lovely day to The Pleasant Pheasant In Riebeeck-West. He has been there previously with his cousin and promised we will go there one day. So after being dressed in a little bit of red to celebrate the day of love, we took the 30 minutes drive out to The Pleasant Pheasant. The Pleasant Pheasant is lovely restaurant situated between Riebeeck Kasteel and Riebeeck-West, with a lovely play area for families with kids. They are open late morning until after lunch, closes and then...
D V CAFE @ Spice Route
As a morning start for Women's day we had lovely coffee at D V CAFE @ Spice Route, Paarl. We ordered lovely cappuccino for a boost to fully enjoy the day that was laying ahead of us. The lovely warm fire place inside D V Cafe @ Spice Route were already running and there were laughter and joy inside the cafe. We decided to sit outside in the sun at the outside tables. We grabbed the lovely cushions to put underneath our bums and enjoyed the winter sun outside. They have lovely cake domes displaying all their lovely cakes, chocola...
St Helena Nursery & Coffee Shop
St Helena Nursery & Coffee Shop is quite easily one of the finest coffee shops I will recommend to my friends and family. We had the privilege of visiting the St Helana Nursery & Coffee Shop again over the long heritage day weekend of September 2021. We have tried and experimented with most items on the breakfast menu, but always return to our firm favourites. The omelette or Scones with biltong and cheese. The breakfast menu ...
VillaMar Roastery Cafe - Wellington
Recently my husband and I decided to have a visit at a relatively new coffee roastery in Wellington where we live called Villamar Roastery Cafe . I have come across the name quite a few times, by word of mouth and some advertisements. First of all it was easy to find Villa Mar Roastery Cafe. Because we went about 10 H 00 AM in the morning, there were no one when we arrived accept the super friendly staff - and I can emphasize on this! But after seated it became a bit busier. The friendly...
Choosing a Chef Career- PART 2
So here goes the follow up: Choosing a Chef Career- PART 2 As mentioned before, I didn't exactly do my homework very well when I have chosen my chef career, and believe I would have chosen something else when I had the chance again... But the fact that I became a chef still had to be this way. If I didn't become a chef, I would never have met my loving husband who I really love so much, I would have never met most of my Facebook friends, I would never have started this blog, and would never have had this wonderful recipe journal I share with you.... Today I want to focus on the stre...
Choosing a Chef Career- PART 3
Choosing a Chef Career- Part 3 will be a discussion about all the scars and burns you will end up with during your career. I know this might sound like a stupid topic to write about. But I have a few things I would like to share with you about this topic. It is also for others to read and to be careful when you enter the Hospitality Industry as a chef.
Choosing a Chef Career: PART 3:
First of all you will quickly learn in your training when you are pot washer (yes, they let you do this terrible job so that you can ALWAYS HAVE RESPECT FOR THE POT WASHER if you are fortunate eno...Choosing a Chef Career - PART 1
As a very soft, easy-to-walk-over type of person, I personally would not recommend a soft person to become a chef. The Chef Industry is made for bulk-seize(am I allowed to say this???) people with a strong personality and a huge BACKBONE. Being in the industry for almost 15 years now, I can tell there is no place for softies. Unless you find the most picture-perfect job (which is almost impossible) just for you.
Choosing a Chef Career- Part 1
Very poor financial growth- What can you show?
After all these years in my chef career, I can officially say that I am very, very di...Bullying in the Workplace
I feel EXTREMELY STRONG about the topic of BULLYING AT THE WORKPLACE!!! So strong that I have decided today to make this my topic of discussion. Or to write about it and just share it. Most of the time if you want to get over something you must write about it or talk about it. In my case I am writing about bullying in the workplace because I strongly feel that it is becoming worse these days. Bullies are in every type of environment and it doesn't matter in what type of industry. They are always there. I would like to share my bullying experience in the Chef/Hospitality Industry. As I...
Katjiepiering Restaurant at the Stellenbosch Botanical Garden
Katjiepiering Restaurant at the Stellenbosch Botanical Garden is definitely more than worth a visit! What a beautiful garden and restaurant! All the greens around you are already a great start for a lovely relaxing day. The garden is breath-taking beautiful. Katjiepiering restaurant at the Stellenbosch Botanical Garden which was a wonderful choice. My mother arranged it a day before and didn't realize she didn't book and although we didn't have a booking the friendly front of house manager organized a table for us. It is best to book, especially if you are a large table as well. Our wait...
Once in a lifetime work group
When I resigned a few years ago at Augusta Kleinbosch, my manager at that time told me an important phase about the once in a life time work group. At that time I didnt really think about it, but it really came to my mind at a later stage. Our group back there at Augusta Kleinbsoch- we were the once in a life time work group. My kitchen and restaurant group, the 4 of us- we all pretty much started at the same time. And we stayed at Augusta. I was the first to leave- and the other 3 that stayed behind stayed until the end- the end meaning the ravishing fire that destroyed part of the |Guest H...
Breytenbach Art Centre in Wellington
Ashamed to admit, after living over ten years in our town of Wellington, I have only visited our local Breytenbach art centre, once before. So last week, on a bright sunny spring day, I took a stroll down to the Breytenbach art centre. And my oh my, I have enjoyed this experience very much! It absolutely made my day! A have actually read about their coffee shop and little did I actually know about what else there were to discover! The Breytenbach art centre is named after Breyten Breytenbach. He is a South African writer and painter known for his opposition to apartheid, and consequent imp...
